The parts of a structured cabling system

You don’t need to memorize the terms, but knowing the pieces helps you understand a quote:

  • Horizontal cabling — the runs from the central rack out to each wall jack (the “drops”).
  • Patch panel & rack — the organized central point where every cable terminates and gets labeled.
  • Network switch — what the patch panel connects to, feeding data and power (PoE) to phones, cameras, and access points.

One number worth knowing: a copper cabling run has a 328-foot (100-meter) limit from the switch to the device — 295 feet of in-wall cable plus patch cords. How long does structured cabling last?

Can I just add a few cables instead of recabling everything?
